(Clinton.news) In a historic national referendum, just the third in the country’s history, British citizens decided last week to leave the European Union.
Perhaps because his mother hails from Scotland, or perhaps because he is a lover and defender of freedom, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump backed the “Brexit,” as it was dubbed, though he made it clear that, as an American, he really had no say in the matter.
President Obama and his handpicked lackey, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, not so much.
Believing that somehow the both of them, as American political elite, had a say in the matter, they brazenly put forth the opinion that Britons ought to continue to be ruled by an out-of-touch, overly bureaucratic and liberty-stealing European Union which, like the American Congress, was beholden to special interests and other forms of corruption.
For Obama, it was stay in the EU – or else. As reported by Agence France Press in April:
U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday issued a stark warning to British voters considering leaving the European Union, warning a Brexit would lessen the country’s power and hurt job-creating trade ties.
Obama said “Britain is at its best when helping to lead a strong Europe”, while warning the UK on its own would move to the “back of queue” for trans-Atlantic trade deals if it votes to leave the EU in a referendum in June.
As you might have expected, that drew a very sharp rebuke. Andrew Roberts, writing in the Wall Street Journal, hit the nail on the head when he wrote:
Surely—surely—this is an issue on which the British people, and they alone, have the right to decide, without the intervention of President Obama, who adopted his haughtiest professorial manner when lecturing us to stay in the EU, before making the naked threat that we would be sent “to the back of the queue” (i.e., the back of the line) in any future trade deals if we had the temerity to vote to leave.
Clinton, of course, may not have been as “haughty,” but she was just as arrogant in telling the British what they should do. Her campaign issued this statement:
Hillary Clinton believes that transatlantic cooperation is essential, and that cooperation is strongest when Europe is united. She has always valued a strong United Kingdom in a strong EU. And she values a strong British voice in the EU.
Well, as usual, Obama – and Clinton – tend to enjoy thinking that the world revolves around their every desire and whim, but the world doesn’t agree, obviously.
“She’s always misread everything, if you think. She’s misread this,” Trump said during a press conference in Scotland, where he is reopening a refurbished golf course (and creating jobs and revenue).
As for Obama, Trump said, he is “constantly dictating to the world what they should do. The world doesn’t listen to him, obviously. You can see that from the vote. I actually think his recommendation … caused it to fail.”
Obama. Clinton. Wrong side of the issues and on the wrong side of history.
