(Clinton.news) It’s no wonder that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton wanted the country to move on from reports that she was using an unauthorized private email server that she kept in her home for official business she conducted as secretary of state: Because new revelations are coming all the time now about how careless and dismissive she was of national security.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that for weeks in December 2010 State Department staffers fought over a serious technical problem with then-Secretary Clinton’s personal server, which caused them to temporarily disable security features, leaving it more vulnerable to hackers.
Just a few weeks later, according to emails just released as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit by conservative legal watchdog group Judicial Watch, hackers had launched cyber assaults against the server, which forced Clinton’s staff to shut it down. And the next day, close Hillary aide Huma Abedin wrote to other high ranking staff: “Don’t email hrc (Clinton) anything sensitive. I can explain more in person.”
In one sentence Clinton’s assertion that she did not violate national security rules and that her server was “secure” have gone up in smoke. This, from the candidate who claims she is “the most qualified” to be president.
There’s more.
The emails show that IT staff at State had disabled software aimed at thwarting dangerous probing phishing attacks, among other cyber assaults. AP noted further:
They were trying urgently to resolve an apparent conflict between the server’s built-in email delivery features with a version of “ScanMail for Exchange” security software from Trend Micro Inc. that had been installed on her server. Clinton has not previously described any security protections on her server.
AP notes further:
“This should trump all other activities,” a senior technical official, Ken LaVolpe, told IT employees in a Dec. 17, 2010, email.
On Jan. 9, 2011, a State Department IT staffer was forced to shut down Clinton’s server because he believed “someone was trying to hack us.” Later that day, he wrote: “We were attacked again so I shut (the server) down for a few min.”
This latest bombshell comes on the heels of scathing State Department Inspector General’s report which concluded that Clinton and her team ignored clear internal federal guidance that her personal server violated established government rules and statutory laws for the handling of classified materials, and that it could be vulnerable to hacking. Aides continually dismissed such concerns, instructing IT staff that “the matter was not to be discussed further,” according to the IG report.
For his part on Wednesday, Clinton’s likely GOP opponent said he believes that a foreign government or entity was in possession of her emails – perhaps Russia.
“So they probably now have a blackmail file over someone who wants to be President of the United States. This fact alone disqualifies her from the presidency,” Trump said. “We can’t hand over our government to someone whose deepest, darkest secrets may be in the hands of our enemies.”
